The Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Spot.

Initially, this album could seem closer to a difficult university examination rather than the latest pop project by an artist whose previous single featured an international K-pop icon. Divided into 4 separate parts and voiced in 13 languages, we have a head-spinning symphonic opus that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical change, frequently by way of the prism of various women saints. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, supported by the constant presence of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the work of other artists look quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend overly intellectual posturing is almost miraculous, with sole praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, the ambitions feel far greater on Lux, and the balancing act more pronounced. What truly raises this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly on the stirring Italian song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The track immediately shifts to the wild track featuring racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The magic with Lux is that you never exactly understand—nor want to know—what it is going to next."

Almost every song ends in a completely different point from how it started. A track explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her earlier trap-infused style begins off dark and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key achievement on the album is straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells on a chorus that seems to gather more and more infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat gets echoed on a different powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving layered tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to completely explore but never seem like hard work. Where some big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flit from conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative visionary.
