The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
